Faith vs. Unbelief…Liberty vs. Bondage

by Al Benson Jr.

General Michael Flynn recently had some informative commentary posted on for March 8th of this year. General Flynn talked about truth and his comments were insightful.

He said: “When fighting for truth, the most important place to start is to be well-grounded in the Truth itself. I am referring to Truth with a capital T, as in “I am the way, the truth, and the life’.” General Flynn knows where to go for truth and Who to go to, the One who is the foundation of all truth. (John 14:6).

General Flynn then makes some sound observations. He states: “Faith in God is an essential part of the fight to restore American greatness. Our personal faith is inextricably linked to our personal liberties. Alexis de Tocqueville, the great French author of the groundbreaking work Democracy in America wrote ‘Upon my arrival in the United States, the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention…The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.’ De Tocqueville is exactly right. Prior to America’s founding no document in the world had directly linked the individual rights of citizens to their unique value and autonomy before an omnipotent Creator…Faith and freedom can never be separated from one another. If you wish to have boldness in the fight for America like our Founding Fathers did, have faith in Almighty God. Trust in His power as your sword and your shield…Make faith an essential part of your battle strategy today…”

It would seem that General Flynn has made some salient points in how we need to fight to get our country back. Unfortunately, in our day, most Christians seem to have forgotten much of the wisdom he has imparted. Many of them have no interest as Christians in fighting to preserve those liberties we have that are God-given. Many Christians do not deem God-given liberty worth fighting for. It seems to me that if God gave it then it is worth fighting for, lest we end up spurning what the Lord was gracious enough to bestow upon us.

But many of our brethren today seem to have had their faith neutralized to the point that all they want to do is wait for “the rapture” to take them out of this mess so they don’t have to be involved. Then there are those who say “Don’t sweat all this stuff. The Lord is in control.” If the Lord is in control that’s their rationale for not doing anything. The Lord will do it all and they can just come along for the spiritual joyride. I hate to burst your spiritual bubble, but it doesn’t quite work that way. Truly the Lord is in control. No sensible person would argue with that. But often the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, chooses to use His people to exercise some of that control. Unfortunately in our day, many Christians ain’t having any of that. That’s not part of their game plan. Their agenda is to get themselves to Heaven–end of conversation!!!

How often, in the Scriptures, do we see the Lord working by using His people to accomplish certain things? How about Moses, or Elijah, or even Jonah? God accomplished miracles through these men, and through Jesus’ apostles–but he used these people to do it. Faith in their Lord resulted in action from these men, not their just sitting around waiting for the Lord todo it all with no involvement on their part. That’s where we seem to be today. Many of our brethren seem possessed of “couch potato faith.” They will sit blithely on their couches, in front of the boob tube, watching CNN and then tell others not to worry because the Lord is in control and He won’t let anything happen to them or their country. True faith has been replaced by spiritual frivolity.

Preserving your liberty requires, as General Flynn noted, a sound grounding in the Truth and the One is the giver of all truth. It then requires action, sweat, effort, and a reliance on the Lord to show you how to use the truth He gives you to preserve what He has given you. Just sitting around waiting for the Lord to do it all doesn’t cut the mustard. Ultimately the Lord does it all, but He is pleased to use us in that process–and that is something we need to begin to think about.

Quit praying for a “rapture” and start asking the Lord to show you what He wants you to do to preserve the liberty He has given you. I realize lots of folks don’t want to hear this but the church as a whole needs to hear it and to rethink our exercises in spiritual lethargy. If we will not strive to preserve what the Lord has given use He will find others who will–and they will get the benefits and not us.

Ahh, Those Yankee Slaveowners

by Al Benson Jr.

I have recently been given a copy of Ron and Donnie Kennedy’s classic work The South Was Right! This is the new, updated edition for 2020, published by Shotwell Publishing in Columbia, South Carolina. I had thought to do a book review of this outstanding work. However, the new updated version, with much new information, is almost 500 pages in length and so no single book review of this will suffice. What I am going to do instead is to pick out pertinent information and topics from the book and do a series of articles on that information. If some of what I present from The South Was Right! makes you a bit uncomfortable you can consider that you have been a victim of badly presented half truths as depicted in what passes for history books in most of our schools today. The Kennedy Brothers’ book, if you will take the time to read it, will correct much of the meaningless drivel you were taught as “history” but really wasn’t.

I thought a good place to start would be with the subject of Yankee slaver owners, covered in their book from pages 153-163 as part of Chapter 5. This is history you will never, and I mean never, see in your establishment “history” books because our court “historians” like their contemporaries in the “news media” have decreed that you don’t need to know this stuff–so they will make sure you don’t!

The Kennedys observe, on page 153, that: “No other issue in American history has been abused more than the history of African servitude in the South. People who dare to speak about slavery in a light other than that demanded by the neo-Marxist left will find themselves an outcast from modern ‘P.C.’ society. Nevertheless, when we look at America, we find that many names that we associate with the development of this country have been associated with slavery. The names of the Puritan Fathers of New England loom foremost in that group of slave holders. Even men such as Josiah Franklin, stepbrother of Benjamin Franklin, was associated with slavery, being active as a slave dealer in Boston. Yet the Franklin name is never held up for scorn because of the action of the Boston Franklin family. John Hancock, the most prominent signatory of the Declaration of Independence, was both a participant in a slave trading venture and a slave holder. But have you ever heard the cry to take down any monuments to John Hancock? Hancock was not the only New England signatory of the Declaration of Independence who was a slave holder. Samuel Huntington of Connecticut and Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island were also slave holders, and their names can also be found on the Declaration of Independence.” There are those useful idiots that claim no one in the North ever owned slaves. That’s a bald-faced lie and many of them know it. Their goal in life is to make sure you don’t know it!

The Kennedys continue: “When the previous paragraph was written in 1994, neo-Marxists had just begun their attacks upon Confederate monuments and Southern history. At that time the nation was warned by so-called ‘neo-Confederates’ that one day all Traditional American Values and heroes would come under assault–that day surely arrived in 2020. Rather than joining with the defenders of the South’s history, neo-conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and many others assisted the neo-Marxists in their efforts to denigrate and destroy the South’s heritage and history. Neo-conservatives did this by agreeing with the neo-Marxist’s narrative of the South fighting to preserve and promote slavery (something that came out of the mouth of Karl Marx, see Benson and Kennedy, Lincoln’s Marxists, Chapter 2) and promoting secession as treason. By not allowing the Southern narrative about these issues to be heard, censorship by exclusion, the neo-Marxists were given all the cover and encouragement needed to advance their attack upon ALL Traditional American Values. the slogan of being ‘Fair and Balanced’ seems to not apply when dealing with the people of the defeated Confederate States of America.”

As noted by the Kennedys on page 157: “If the South is an evil place because it had slaves, then so is the North. If Southerners were wrong for owning slaves, then what about the Northerners who sold them those slaves? If the South is to be castigated because a small minority of its citizens made money from slave-grown cotton, then what about the North whose textile mills made money from that same slave-grown cotton?

Back on page 108 the Kennedys noted that: “Our neo-Marxist opponents d not want to work with us–they want to exterminate us or at least our Western Christian civilization. They are full of hatred toward all traditional Western American and Christian values as well as hatred for those who believe in such values. Lists of numerous neo-Marxist attacks against conservatives is proof of their uninhibited hatred–a hatred that is shielded and under-reported by the leftist media.” It is indeed too bad that most of our people in our Southern Heritage Movement simply do not seem to grasp this. They probably watch way too much of what passes for “news” from the leftist media which inhibits their discernment.

Lord willing, we will provide more information from the latest edition of The South Was Right! as we are able.

Some Politically Correct (bad) History For Oklahoma

by Al Benson Jr.

Member, Board of Directors, Confederate Society of America

Way back before I was married I lived for part of one year in Oklahoma, in addition to having spent quite a bit of time over the years in and out of the state. Oklahoma has always been one of my favorite spots in the country. I always found the folks there warm and friendly.

The year we lived there my Dad and I went down to Oklahoma City to find out about getting work in the state park system. That didn’t work out for us and it’s probably good that it didn’t, for had it done so I would not have gone back east and ended up marrying my wife. So the Lord had a plan for us in leaving Oklahoma. That being said, I still remember Oklahoma with fondness and my wife and I have visited it on more than one occasion as I wanted her to see one of the places in the West that I had learned to love.

So it was with a certain degree of sadness that I recently read an article by Allan Wall on abolishing the Oklahoma Land Run Monument from the community college in Oklahoma City.

Mr. Wall observed: “The land runs, which were actual races for land, are part of Oklahoma history. It’s how a significant portion of the state was settled. The first land run was in 1889, settling an area of central Oklahoma called ‘the unassigned lands’ which was uninhabited and not belonging to any Indian tribe. that’s the land run in which Oklahoma City was founded, jumping the population from zero to 10,000 in one day. In this era of Heritage Haters, the Land Runs are under attack. Now a monument at the Oklahoma City college has been removed…The large concrete slab, visible outside the main building on campus, depicted those who came to Oklahoma for the Land Run of 1889 as heroes and innovators, OCCC officials said. Executive Vice President Danita Rose, whose maternal grandfather was of Cherokee descent, said that the decision to remove the monument was a top priority for the executive leadership team.” In other words, the politically correct element at the college wanted this monument gone regardless of its value to the heritage of the state.

Some noted that it was the old “I’m Cherokee” argument but Mr. Wall gives the lie to that foolishness when he notes: “The land settled in the 1889 land run was not Cherokee land, had never been Cherokee l land and was never settled by the Cherokee.” And, interestingly enough, it had been a Cherokee who, in 1879,suggested that these unassigned lands be opened up to white settlement!

Danita Rose commented that: “If our goal is to create a community that is inclusive and welcoming to everyone, a monument that depicts cruelty and oppression can’t be on display here.” Frankly, I am at a loss to see how a monument to a land rush for land that was uninhabited contributes to cruelty and oppression, but then that’s just me. I’m sure the politically correct leftists among us can point to how any monument, anywhere, that they don’t particularly like contributes to cruelty and oppression in their narrow minds. I suppose they’d like to see the Land Rush monument replaced with a statue of either Marx or Lenin, those compassionate champions of humanity whose followers killed millions. Now wouldn’t such be a major contribution to “diversity”?

Actually what it all comes down to is that, when it comes to monuments “no white folks need apply.” In this day and age the definition of diversity means everybody except white folks. We are simply beyond the pale when it comes to diversity.

The Land Run of 1889 did not create oppression and/or cruelty but that doesn’t matter. The leftists claim it did and that’s all that matters. If you dare to question their historical knowledge or perspective then you are nothing but a racist bigot–so sit down and shut up!

It would seem that the Community College of Oklahoma City has succumbed to the thrall of leftist dogma so prevalent on most campuses today. Now, even with community colleges you have to be careful where you send your kids as there are fewer and fewer places where they won’t be bombarded with socialist doctrines. I wonder, with all that is going on today, how much Communist China has to do with what is being taught in many colleges.

An Epiphany On January 6th

by Al Benson Jr.

Member, Board of Directors, Confederate Society of America

The way the term Epiphany is usually used in Christian circles on January 6th each year refers to the manifestation of the Lord Jesus to the gentiles–in this case the Wise Men as outlined in the Biblical narrative. The Lord Jesus was manifested, or revealed, to the Wise Men in such a way that they realized His Divinity and who He really was.

This year on January 6th we will witness yet another epiphany to go along with the revealing of the Lord Jesus. This second epiphany, a political one, will reveal just what our Congress is going to do in regard to the massive voter fraud in this recent election where Mr. Trump, and by extension, the American people, had this last presidential election stolen from them by a gaggle of leftists, Democrats, Republicans, Marxists, the news media and certain big tech outfits that would make Karl Marx proud. After all, Marx and those people mentioned herein all have or had the same master–one who is evil incarnate.

Several senators and congress people do plan to protest what was an illegal election in several states. We will see where that goes on the 6th.

At this point my own personal opinion is that the powers that be in both our political parties really want Harris/Biden in the White House instead of having to deal with another four years of Donald Trump. Mr. Trump really crimps their leftist style and after four years of fighting against those people he is finally beginning to figure out where the bodies are buried and they don’t want him out there digging them up now so they will move heaven and earth to make sure Harris/Biden (I list Harris first because everyone realizes that she will be the real power in the White House, not Biden) occupy the White House no matter what. They are willing to sell the country out to ensure that. They don’t care about this country. Regardless of political party they are globalists and so they have no country–at least none this side of hell.

So I expect to see this Wednesday a monumental attempt by the left to shoot down, in Congress, any real attempt to deal with the faulty election results and to rush to certify Harris/Biden as the official water carriers for this left in this country and for the Chinese Communists who probably had more to do with our election results than we have been told about by our absent minded mainstream media.

It will be interesting to see how many of our congress critters strive to tap dance around this issue as they labor to deep six any effort to get to the bottom of the massive election fraud we suffered on November 3rd. Keep an eye on their political gyrations as they seek to legitimize the vote fraud perpetrated on the American electorate.

What they do to preserve the results of this fraudulent election may end up being a real epiphany to many naive voters who, up to now, have trusted their elected representatives in Washington. You may end up being treated to a real manifestation of their devotion to the cause of leftism in this country and the world. Just remember who their master really is and you will have no trouble understanding why they do what they do.

Marxism Is Alive And Well In America Today

by Al Benson Jr.

Member, Board of Directors, Confederate Society of America

I have stated in the past the communism was alive and well in America and, indeed, has been since the 1850s–not the 1950s–but the 1850s. Most folks seem incapable of grasping that fact. It has, however, been written about by several authors and writers over the decades, though most Marxists in our day try to cover that up. They don’t feel you need to be aware of the activities of their spiritual ancestors–and I use the word “spiritual” here because, at root, Marxism is not a political movement, though it manifests itself in the political arena. It is an anti-Christ spiritual movement and part of its agenda is to keep American Christians in the dark as to its real intents.

I recently came across an interesting article by Vasko Kohlmayer on for October 31st of this year. Mr. Kohlmayer seems to have an extensive knowledge and grasp of how Marxism has affected our society in the past century or so. He observes that “Marxism is far from being dead as a worldview. Quite to the contrary, it is very much alive. It shapes–directly or indirectly–the worldview of many in the American intelligentsia, many of whom hold important posts at universities, in the media and in government.” He is right on the money here and I personally know of some instances regarding what he says about some universities or colleges.

He continues: “To be sure, most of these individuals do not openly present themselves as traditional Marxists..” He notes that many of them will even concede that “classical Marxism” is flawed and his its faults. This superficial criticism of Marxism fools lots of people, and it always has. Years ago I read a book written by a Soviet secret policeman who had been situated into Europe during the Second World War. He was told by the spymasters who trained him that he was free to criticize communism on a certain level to give himself credibility but that if they ever heard that he had criticized the principles of Marxism-Leninism then they would come and get him and that would be the final act in his charade.

The same principle holds true today. Kohlmayer notes that their “attitude gives these ideological mutants an air of seeming reasonableness and objectivity. But they will not let go of Marx’s basic assumptions. Having retained Marx’s core ‘insights,’ they either modify his theories on the edges or develop them in new directions. As a result, in the past eighty years we have witnessed a proliferation of philosophies and theoretical systems derived from Marx’s teachings. Here is a partial list: Critical Race Theory; The Frankfurt School; Liberation Theology; Neo-Marxism; Cultural Marxism; Marxist Feminism; Marxist Humanism; Post-Marxism.” This is not the complete list by any means but I have listed the ones most folks might have had some knowledge of.

Kohlmayer tells us that “Even though the theoretical systems above deal with many different aspects of the life of the individual and society, they grow from the same poisoned Marxist root. Yet, despite their ignoble origin most of these schools of thought are considered acceptable if not outright respectable.” That fact alone tells you how deeply penetrated our society has been by the Marxists that lurk among us and who pose as “respectable academics, journalists, politicians or whatever field they exert their influence in.

He cites one example some of you all have probably heard of–Critical race theory. Of that he states: “This Marxist–spawned system has become the de facto worldview in many university departments, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. Astonishingly critical race theory has been routinely taught to employees of the federal government under the guise of sensitivity training.” Someone must have alerted President Trump to this because he issued an executive order ending this “form of Marxist indoctrination.”

Kohlmayer tells us that “Critical race theory is a modern approach to social change, developed from the broader critical theory, which developed out of Marxism.” And he issus us a warning–if we will heed it. He says The decades–long infusion of Marxism into America’s bloodstream has reached a critical level and now we are on the verge of a Marxist coup d’etat.” He notes all the riots and protests in the past few months and the Marxist intent of such groups as Black Lives Matter, whose banners hang in many public schools in this country and in front of some churches.

In a prescient observation Kohlmayer tells us that: “Marxism is thus not some discarded ideology…Marxism is a living creed, forming the motive behind the thinking and actions of those responsible for the present upheaval in the United States. Rather than being irrelevant, Marxism is a powerful and destructive force that threatens to rip America apart.”

That’s a pretty fair country description of what Marxism has been doing in this country for a long time. Maybe we should start asking who funds these Marxist groups because Marxism always needs outside infusions of cash to fund its activities. So who funds them and why? We’ve dealt with some of this in the past. Maybe we need to again.

Communism and Vote Fraud or Freedom Under God

by Al Benson Jr.

Member, Board of Directors, Confederate Society of America

Anyone who has followed this blog recently knows I have been following the dicey results of this recent election rather closely. That there has been massive fraud I have no doubt. Mr. Trump’s legal team has dug up all manner of evidence regarding this, much of which has not yet been made public. But this will not be easy for them mainly because many of these judges hearing their complaints are “never-Trumpers” who, quite frankly, don’t care what evidence is presented. Many of them will summarily reject whatever is presented, no matter how compelling, because they are denizens of the deep state and their agenda is to make sure Trump does not get his second term no matter what.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers will have to go all the way to the Supreme Court and then pray that one or two of the “conservative” jurists do not decide to sell out the way John Roberts did years ago with the Obamacare charade. Roberts was supposed to be a conservative–and he was–except when he was busy placating the liberals, which seems to be happening more and more of late. You might almost say “with conservatives like Roberts, who needs liberals?”

The Epoch Times site carried an editorial on November 13th that explained this present election situation quite succinctly. I can’t quote all of it here, but will give you a brief taste of it so you will get the tenor of it. It said, in part, “Many Americans believe communism is an abstract concept, something that only affects faraway nations, without realizing that it has already arrived at our doorstep. Communism has spread in America under such names as socialism, progressivism, liberalism, neo-Marxism, and so on, in a slow process over decades of systematic subversion by first the Soviet Union and now the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This cumulative battle for the future of America–and with it the rest of the world–is now coming to a head in the U.S. presidential election…Belief in God has always been fundamental to America The early colonists fled here so that they could practice their religion freely…Belief in God and the principles derived from the belief are the fundamental reasons why the United States can enjoy freedom, democracy, and prosperity, and why the United States has become the nation it is today. In this great tradition, voting is a sacred duty in which each citizen may take responsibility for who governs. This year, a record number of Americans voted to choose their next leader. we have since learned that this process has been subverted. Numerous credible allegations of voter fraud have emerged, pointing to a systematic effort to change the outcome of the election. The far-left and the communist devil behind it– the same force that Karl Marx once described as haunting Europe–are using lies, fraud, and manipulation in an attempt to deprive the people of their rights and freedoms.”

We do not realize how close to becoming a communist country we really are. We may end up being communist if the courts in this country somehow decide that the credible evidence of voter fraud are just going to be ignored because all the people in the right places have already decided that Harris/Biden need to be the winners no matter what. If that ends up being the case, then who profits? Certainly not the American people–but someone will profit. Like the man says “You can vote your way into socialism–but you have to shoot your way out.” That’s why the left wants your guns. You’re not supposed to be able to shoot your way out.

An article on for November 20, written by Jack Phillips noted that “A professor of mathematics at Williams College, in a sworn affidavit, flagged nearly 100,000 ballots in Pennsylvania after analyzing election data and phone interviews. Steven Miller who specializes in analytic number theory and systematics, said that one instance of possible fraud involved potential votes that weren’t counted and another instance involved ballots that may have been requested by a person other than the GOP registered voter.

Miller said “I estimate that the number of ballots that were either requested by someone other than the registered Republican or requested and returned but not counted range from 89,397 to 98,801.” Miller said this in the sworn statement according to Just the News.

So Miller has submitted a sworn affidavit to this effect and there is a penalty for submitting a false sworn statement. Undoubtedly a court in Pennsylvania will reject this, along with other credible evidence because Harris/Biden are supposed to win–again, no matter what. After all, the future of Chinese Communist Party domination of America depends on a Harris/Biden victory. And if you think Harris isn’t up to her eyeballs in Marxist affiliations then you haven’t been paying attention. A lot depends on the outcome of this election–for both sides!

Communism–A Religion of Terrorism

by Al Benson Jr.

Member, Board of Directors, Confederate Society of America

Whittaker Chambers, the author of Witness is quite blunt about what makes communism really tick. He has written: “The Communist Party, despite occasional pious statements to the contrary, is a terrorist organization. Its disclaimers are for the record. But its record of kidnappings, assassinations, and murders makes the actions of the old Terror Brigade of the Socialist Revolutionary Party look merely romantic. No argument can reach the Communist Party unless it sees in it some self-serving advantage. It respects only force.” To update a bit, you can say the exact same thing about these communist groups operating in this country today–Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and a host of others. Their willful depredations in many of our major cities show that they only respect force–and when the police are ordered to stand down in the face of their planned destruction then there is no force to detract them from doing whatever they want.

To see the planned terrorism of the Communists in action Chambers told us a bit about the purges under Stalin. These were purges in which the Communist state even killed many of its own. Chambers told us: “This great massacre, probably the greatest in history, was deliberately planned and executed. In the interest of the Revolution…the group of Communists headed by Stalin decided that the historical situation through which the world and the Communist Party was passing, justified them in killing off those Communists who opposed their indispensable strategy and tactics. Those killed have been estimated from several hundred thousand to several million men and women. The process took about three years, 1935 through 1938. Its immediate purpose was to give the Stalinists absolute control of the Communist Party and the Soviet government, then of the Red Army, then of the secret police (G.P.U.).” So if you had some in your own Party that dared to disagree with you on some minor point you just killed them off…The charge on which they were one and all destroyed, the charge that they had betrayed their handiwork, was incredible. They were the Communist Party. If the charge were true, then every other Communist had given his life for a fraud. If the charge was false, then every other Communist was giving his life for a fraud.”

You have to realize that there was no room for divergences of opinion among communists. You adhered to the Party line or you were tomorrow’s cannon fodder. The fact that the Party line might change from one day to the next made no difference. The Stalin-Hitler pact was one instance of this. The Party line changed literally overnight and faithful Party members were automatically expected to go with the flow–and heaven help those who dared to disagree!

Chambers wrote about Communism that “denies the soul in the name of the mind.” And he gave us a quote–“Man cannot organize the world for himself without God; without God man can only organize the world against man.” The French Revolution proved that. And the Marxist mentalities among us today still have not learned that lesson after over two hundred years. Their current attacks on the white race have shown that they have learned nothing. I have no doubt whatever that if they felt their attacks on us would be tolerated they would cheerfully kill millions of us. Maybe at this point what they are afraid of is that many of us will shoot back. Communists are really stingy when it comes to spilling their own blood. They love “doing it unto others” but they don’t want it “done unto them.”

I recall, in the late 1970s, an article I read about four communist terrorists that went into a church in South Africa, armed with AK 47s and started shooting helpless church members. There was one man in the congregation that was armed with a 38 revolver and he shot back at the Red thugs wounding one of them. That was enough for them. The communist thugs, AK 47s and all, fled the scene, faced down by one lone man with a 38! Most communists are really cowards when they meet any resistance.

So the communist faith is one that promotes terrorism–and the one thing they fear is resistance. Determined resistance usually seems to deter them. The problem today is–will anyone give them determined resistance?

I have a friend who is a keen observer of the world situation and from time to time he offers me some biting comments. In response to my last article he said the following–“Add to this the Higher Criticism and the heavy infiltration by Communists into the church and the seminaries and we have a church that is not able to stop this onslaught against this nation. By this means Christianity has been reduced to a spectator’ sport.” While there are obviously some exceptions to this, I am afraid there are not nearly enough to make a difference at the national level. And a watered-down church, with watered-down doctrine is not nearly strong enough to resist not only national terrorism, but also theological terrorism in some form.

Why People Become Communists

by Al Benson Jr.
Member, Board of Directors, Confederate Society of America

Whittaker Chambers, in his book Witness deals with the rationale of why many people end up embracing communism. They perceive that the faith of communism will protect them in times of crisis. Of course this never really happens, but then, most people never stop to figure that out.

Chambers notes, on page 192, that “Few Communists have ever been made simply by reading the works of Marx or Lenin. The crisis of history makes Communists; Marx and Lenin merely offer them an explanation of the crisis and what to do about it. Thus a graph of Communist growth would show that its numbers and its power increased in waves roughly equivalent to each new crest of crisis…The economic crisis which reached the United States in 1929 swept thousands into the Communist Party or under its influence. The military crisis of World War 2 swept in millions more;…Communism is never stronger than the failure of other faiths.” One wonders if the apostacy in the churces might have had anything to do with this

Chambers also observed, on page 195, that “The dying world of 1925 was without faith, hope, character, understanding of its malady or will to overcome it. It was dying but it laughed. And this laughter was not the defiance of a vigor that refuses to know when it is whipped. It was the loss, by the mind of a whole civilization, of the power to distinguish between reality and unreallity, because, ulltimately, thouugh I did not know it, it had lost the power to distinguish between good and evil. This failure I too, shared with the world of which I was a part. The dying world had no answer at all to the crisis of the 20th century,…” This explains, at least in part, as to why Chambers became a Communist.

I ask myself, in all of this cultural morass, where was the Christian Church? Was it speaking to this situation and no one was listening? If so, then you can’t blame the church if she spoke and no one listened. But what if the church wasn’t dealing with this or was sending mixed messages?

Where was the church in this country in the early 1900s? Remember, we are talking about twenty years, in some cases less, after the publication of the Scofield Bible with its many “notes” explaining what the Scriptures are supposed to be telling us. Scofield was influenced by the Plymouth Brethren and John Nelson Darby. In his book Death of the Church Victorious Pastor Ovid Need Jr. explained what these folks believed. He noted, on page 169 that “In the aftermath of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, ‘the ideas that went to make up Brethrenism were in the air, and were extensively obtaining embodiment.’ Largely because of this, these groups shared a determinism not to get involved in ‘secular’ affairs, which ‘represented a retreat into the shelter of spiritual monasticism…’ No part was played by them in politics, except the giving of submission and honour to the powers that be, and the offering of prayer for them.’ Thus we see that rather than attempting to convert the nations to Christ through the gospel, the movement reacted by withdrawing. These small groups devoid of spiritual leadership started in the British Isles, and the hopeless faith was brought into the U.S. through immigration. Because they only reacted against sin instead of acting upon the word of God, theirs was a serious over-reaction against all social involvement, an educated clergy, a systematic interpretation of Scripture, and any involvement in civil government–they threw out the baby with the bath water.”

In other words, in the 1800s and early 1900s we had a church in this country that was mostly devoid of anything having to do with civil government and sought to avoid any contact with the real world. Admittedly there were exceptions to this, theologians like R. L. Dabney, who saw the direction the country was headed in and tried to warn those who had enough sense to listen. Unfortunately, most by that time did not want to listen and so what brave people like Dabney tried to warn them about was all but ignored. By the early 1900s we had a church in this country that was mostly in the throes of retreatism. And such a church is not equipped to deal with any real crisis So the Communists steal in and pretend to deal with the crisis that the church couldn’t, or wouldn’t, deal with.

Do you begin to see now why we have had some of the problems with communism that we have had? An informed church could have dealt with much of this. But a church that believed that communism in only a political entity will deal with none of it because they feel it is “of this world” and so is not worth bothering with. The church’s failure to deal with communism as a competing, anti-Christian theology has not been helpful. They have, in fact, conceded this world to the devil as if it were beneath the Lord’s notice. They have apparently forgotten that part of the Lord’s Prayer that says, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

What Communism Is And Isn’t

Too many Christians have swallowed the fantasy that communism is nothing more than one more political philosophy. As such they have been led to believe that it is “of this world” and therefore they need have nothing whatever to do with anything concerning it which includes being in opposition to it. They have been taught that we should be “so heavenly minded that we should be no earthly good.” Unfortunately, most have willingly complied–therefore they are waiting to be taken out of this life so they don’t have to do anything about the mess we currently live in. It’s lots easier that way–no responsibility to try to make things any better or to change the culture around them–just coast along and let the Lord do it all. To their chagrin they will find out it doesn’t work that way, even though that is what the notes in their Scofield Bibles advocate.

In this instance they could take a lesson from Whittaker Chambers, a former Communist who broke with the Communist Party and embraced the Catholic faith. Chambers wrote the monumental book Witness in which he told about his years as a Communist as well as exposing many he knew in the Communist Party, including Alger Hiss, first Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Chambers explained communism in a way many Christians in our day would probably not be able to grasp. He stated: “First, let me try to say what Communism is not. It is not simply a vicious plot hatched by wicked men in a sub-cellar. It is not just the writings of Marx and Lenin, dialectical materialism, the Politburo, the labor theory of value, the theory of the general strike, the Red Army, secret police, labor camps, underground conspiracy, the dictatorship of the proletariat, the technique of the coup d’etat. It is not even those chanting, banered millions that stream periodically, like disorganized armies, through the heart of the world’s capitals…These are the expressions of Communism, but they are not what Communism is about.”

He continued: “Communists are that part of mankind which has recoverd the power to live or die–to beat witness–for its faith…It is not new. It is, in fact, man’s second oldest faith. Its promise was whispered in the first days of the Creation under the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil: ‘Ye shall be as gods.’ It is the great alternative faith of mankind…Other ages have had great visions. They have always been different versions of the same vision: the vision of God and man’s relationship to God. The Communist vision is the vision of Man without God. It is the vision of man’s mind displacing God as the creative intelligence of the world.”

In other words, communism is the religion of man, without God there to get in his way and to prevent him from doing all he wants to do to gain power over the lives of others–all others! Chambers understood the true theological nature of communism, an anti-God, anti-Christ religion that manifests itself in the political realm but is every bit as theological as it is political. Would to God more Christians had the ability to figure this out.

Witness was originally printed in 1952 but it was reprinted in 1985. You might want to check out and see if the 1985 version is still available. It was reprinted by Regnery Gateway Inc. It is a big book. Over 700 pages, so it will take you awhile to read it. In going over my notes in the book I noted that I had read most of it twice before, back a few years, but you can always learn more from a good book by the rereading of it.

Chambers names names and gives you a good running history of Communist activity in this country in the 1930s-40s, especially around Washington.

It finally dawned on Chambers that communism was both wrong and evil. He broke with it because he became convinced it was the right thing to do. Interestingly, when he broke with communism he felt he was leaving the winning side and going over to the losing side–but he still felt it was right, no matter the personal results to him.

I can remember, years ago, I talked to a man in the church we attended at that time, in Indiana. I explained to him my reasons for opposing communism. To which he replied “You are going to lose. You know that don’t you?” I thought that was a surprising comment for a Christian to make, but, in light of where much of the Church is at in our day, I don’t suppose it was atypical. I can remember replying to him that “In the final analysis it isn’t important who wins and who loses. Doing the right thing is what counts.” With a little more wisdom now, I can certify that, in the long run, the communist will not win. He may prevail in the short term, but the Lord will have the final say. He may use His people to have that say–and to do that He may even use some of them in the political realm. Maybe that is an idea more Christians should start getting used to, even though, at this point they shrink from that thought.

If the Lord’s people refuse to confront that which is evil, He may end up finding others who will be more willing to tackle what is evil and to expose it.

Marxist Religion And Its Infiltration Into Our Institutions

Herbert A. Philbrick, in his penetrating book I Led Three Lives made a number of astute observations that it would behoove us to give some consideration to in our day.

He told us, for instance, by asking a question, when he said: “What was it that instilled such devotion into these Communists, to labor so hard for such a distorted cause. What was it that got into them? Was it sincere belief in the prattle of communism? Was it disillusionment and frustration that led them into these paths?” Actually what had gotten into them was a religious faith, though most of them would not have labeled it as that. It was a theological premise that Karl Marx was some sort of secular deity, possessed of the wisdom to right all the wrongs in the world.

Philbrick also told us, of public schools, that “The subject of Communism was seldom discussed, much less studied, in public school…I could not recall having seen a single textbook on the subject of communism. (Even today, very few public schools provide either courses or textbooks on communism.” The few books I had come across in the public library appeared to be mostly by apologists for communism; Walter Duranty (of the New York Times), Corliss Lamont; millionaire son of the multi-millionaire Thomas Lamont; or Rev. Hewlett Johnson, a clergyman high in the Church of England.” Lots of information in these few comments. Public schools of that era taught nothing about communism (not entirely an accident). I can remember, when I was in the sixth grade in public school, there were several books in the school library that gave glowing reports about the United Nations, which was fairly new at that time. It was presented as the last, best hope for mankind–something that has turned out to be a hollow shibboleth.

Public schools in our day seem to have reversed the non-teaching about Marxism or communism. We are now graduating students from them that prattle about how wonderful some sort of communism would be for our country and how “racist” and capitalist this country is and capitalism is listed as the cause of racism, so the two are intertwined with each other.

Note his comments about public libraries. No books in them except for those that apologized for communism. Makes you wonder who was running the libraries doesn’t it. It’s a little bit better in some instances today but you still have to be discerning about what you pull off the shelves to read on the subject of communism.

And after the kiddies get through their latest exercises on the class struggle in high school there is college. Philbrick mentioned a particular person in this regard and I will quote him. He said: “The young woman with the red hair was Dr. Hulda McGarvey. I had previously encountered Hulda in connection with the Sam Adams School for Social Studies, and regarded her as one of many misguided liberals enticed into teaching posts in the Communist-front training school. But I was shocked to see her here in the inner circle of the Communist party. A graduate of Smith College and Columbia University, a former instructor at Mount Holyoke College, and an assistant professor of psychology at Smith, she was a highly regarded academician, unknown for any intimate Communist party connections.” How many other professors in our day are like this woman? Although nowadays professors mostly don’t trouble to hide their Marxist proclivities.

I can remember, a few years after my high school years, a man in the church we attended at that time did not want his son to be taught by one of the English teachers I had had in high school. He was in the Air Force Reserve and had somewhere gotten the info that this teacher was a Communist and refused to have her teach his son. I can’t verify his concerns. This was all over 50 years ago now, but I recall he was quite vehement about this situation, and let’s just say it wouldn’t surprise me. Philbrick mentioned, on page 224 of his book “…a teachers’ (Communist) cell in the public schools,…”

Believe it or not, even the Unitarians came in for “honorable” mention in Philbrick’s book. He mentioned, on pages 71, 132, and 239 various Unitarians that were more than willing to aid the Communists in their endeavors.

Philbrick also mentioned, on page 155, Louis Budenz, who had been the managing director of the Communist Daily Worker newspaper. In 1945 Budenz broke with the Communists and returned to his Catholic faith, somewhat of a shock for the comrades at the time. Years later, I got to know a man who had talked with Budenz after he broke with the Communists and apparently Budenz gave him quite a bit of information as to how the Communists operated at that time.

But, to close this out, one more observation regarding Marxist theology–in regard to the indoctrination given to potential Marxists, Philbrick told us that: “Marxism teaches them to resign themselves to the collective future, to give up the shaping of their own personal destinies, and to accept the alleged inflexible laws of class warfare and ultimate victory for the proletariat. They can simply let themselves go and be carried along to a goal they think they cannot escape.” You can see where such a mindset can become a theological belief. And it is no different today. The belief in violent communist revolution in our day is still a theology. Maybe one of the questions we need to address today is–who is the devil using to direct this theology and how much are they spending to promote it?
